Tyson Foods subsidiary AdvancePierre Foods can proceed with the construction of an improved wastewater treatment system to support its operations in Vineland, New Jersey.

The Vineland planning board, by a 9-0 vote, approved the improvements.

For roughly the past two years, the company utilized a temporary treatment facility to filter wastewater, reported the Daily Journal. The new wastewater treatment system will be built on a now vacant area, according to a plan filed with the city.

The facility, which has both raw and cooked production lines for Philly steak, was acquired with AdvancePierre Foods’ acquisition of Allied Specialty Foods from Steven Zoll. The transaction was valued at $60 million.

Less than one year later, Tyson Foods acquired AdvancePierre Foods -- a leading United States producer of ready-to-eat lunch and diner sandwiches, sandwich components and snacks -- for a price of $4.2 million.

At the time of the transaction, then-Tyson Foods CEO Tom Hayes said AdvancePierre Foods was a “natural, strategic fit that will extend our capabilities in new and growing food categories.” Hayes also said he expected the acquisition of AdvancePierre to immediately contribute to Tyson Foods earnings.

Hayes has since left the company, and he was succeeded as CEO by Noel White.

Since Tyson Foods acquired AdvancePierre, it began renovating a former AdvancePierre Foods plant in Enid, Oklahoma, that had closed several months prior to Tyson taking ownership of AdvancePierre. About 14 jobs will be created when operations at that facility begin again, with the potential for more positions to be added once the plant reaches full production.

A diversified protein company, Tyson Foods is the largest broiler company and fifth largest turkey company in the United States, according to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database. It is also a major producer of beef and pork, and has recently entered the plant-based protein sector.
