5. Wen's Food Group: 807,000,000 head slaughtered annually in 2018
Wen's Food Group is a leading producer of poultry and pigs in China, having consolidated 262 companies to encompass 53,000 family farms across China. It sells in more than 20 provinces and municipalities. In 2017, the company pivoted into livestock slaughtering and meat processing to buffer against the financial strains of low pork prices. Wen's is also planning to sell its own brand of food products through more than 5,000 retail outlets being built in southern China.
In August, WATTAgNet reported that Wen's saw its net profit for the first half of 2019 increase year over year, in spite of the African swine fever (ASF) outbreak. Wen's reported an increased demand for poultry more than made up for losses in pig operations.
