One vaccine protects poultry against 3 infectious diseases

Until recently, poultry producers who wanted to protect their flocks against Marek’s Disease, Infectious Bursal Disease and Newcastle Disease had to use two vaccines – that couldn’t be used together – to protect against the three diseases.

Until recently, poultry producers who wanted to protect their flocks against Marek’s Disease, Infectious Bursal Disease and Newcastle Disease had to use two vaccines – that couldn’t be used together – to protect against the three diseases.

A new vaccine from Boehringer Ingelheim, VAXXITEK® HVT+IBD+ND, provides a strong immune foundation and optimized protection against all three diseases in one dose.

“Having a strong immune foundation and optimized protection against three diseases in a single shot saves time in the vaccine application,” the company said.

“Immunosuppression is an industry threat worldwide, resulting in significant economic losses. Foundational immune health means providing poultry with early protection against the primary immunosuppressive diseases to allow their immune systems to thrive and reach full potential.”

Boehringer Ingelheim will manufacture VAXXITEK® HVT+IBD+ND in Gainesville, Georgia and is currently seeking regulatory approval with several European countries to market the vaccine outside of the U.S. as well.

“Our primary mission is helping poultry producers feed the world with meat and eggs that are not only abundant and cost-effective, but also of the highest possible quality. With markets shifting toward preventive approaches, our legacy in biologics guides our development of vaccines to help safeguard the integrity of our customers’ products,” the company added.

Three highly contagious infections

The three highly contagious infections can affect the nervous, immune, respiratory and immune systems of many species of domestic and wild birds.

The U.S. is currently dealing with an outbreak of virulent Newcastle Disease, with infections found at more than 450 poultry farms nationwide. Infectious Bursal Disease – mainly found in young chickens – causes immunosuppression and increases susceptibility to other infections. The evolving nature of the Marek’s Disease virus has made it a challenge for the poultry industry to control.

INNOVAX-ND-IBD – produced by Merck Animal Health – and ULTIFEND IBD ND – released by CEVA Animal Health – also treat all three poultry diseases in one dose.
