Consumers in Charlotte and Nashville can now try Beyond Fried Chicken at participating KFC locations. The plant-based protein product sold out quickly last summer in Atlanta.

The plant-based nuggets will be offered at more than 60 restaurants in the Charlotte and Nashville markets for a limited time only. If successful, Beyond Fried Chicken could join menus nationwide.

"The iconic flavor of Kentucky Fried Chicken is one that has never been replicated, despite many imitations, until now," Andrea Zahumensky, chief marketing officer, KFC U.S., said in a statement. "We've really pushed the limits to develop plant-based chicken that I think will have KFC and plant-based protein fans saying, 'That's finger lickin' good.'"

Quick service chains McDonald’s, Burger King and Dunkin’ Donuts have also added meat alternatives to their menus. KFC would be the first to sell plant-based chicken.

Success in Atlanta

KFC first trialed the plant-based nuggets at a single store in Atlanta in August 2019. The chain thought the supply would last them for a week – but sold out in less than five hours.

"The response in Atlanta continues to underscore the growing consumer demand for high-quality, delicious plant-based meats. Together with KFC's team, we have created a plant-based chicken that looks, tastes and pulls apart like a chicken breast. I am very proud of what our R&D teams have accomplished and look forward to continuing to lead the charge on plant-based chicken," said Ethan Brown, Beyond Meat Founder & CEO.

KFC says the meat alternative “looks and tastes like KFC's world-famous fried chicken, but with the attributes of plant-based meat.” They’ve tweaked the soy-based recipe to more accurately mimic the taste and texture of real chicken, which will be sold battered and fried.

Beyond Fried Chicken will be sold in a variety of four to 12-piece a la carte and combo options with a choice of dipping sauce options. Prices range from $4.29 to $15.99.
