Planterra Foods, a division of beef and pork processing company JBS, announced March 3 that it will begin selling plant-based burgers, ground meat, Mexican-seasoned ground meat and Italian-style meatballs at U.S. grocery stores beginning in April under the brand name OZO.

To celebrate the launch, the OZO team is going coast-to-coast in order to give 750,000 consumers a taste of the new offerings.

"We can't wait for people to try – and fall for – OZO™ this spring. We know the flavor and quality of our OZO™ products will change the current plant-based food landscape, making them a staple in consumers' homes as a new go-to source of protein, regardless of whether meat is consumed as a regular part of one's diet or not," said Darcey Macken, CEO of Planterra Foods.

According to recently released data from the Good Food Institute (GFI) and the Plant Based Foods Association (PBFA), U.S. retail sales of plant-based meat reached $939 million in 2019, accounting for 2% of retail packaged meat sales.

Additional plant-based innovation coming soon

All four of the OZO meat alternative products are made of a blend of pea and rice protein fermented with shiitake mushrooms. They are non-GMO, do not contain soy and feature no artificial ingredients. The entire OZO product line uses recyclable trays and cartons that feature plant-based ink. Products will retail from $5.99 to $7.99.

Planterra Foods initially planned to launch the brand at the National Foods Expo West in Anaheim, California on March 3-7 before the show was canceled due to coronavirus concerns.

"This category needs better-tasting food from real ingredients that appeals to the whole family, and we're confident that OZO products deliver," Macken said. "These four products are just the beginning of many tasteful offerings that Planterra Foods plans to introduce. Consumers can anticipate finding additional plant-based innovation on shelves by the end of this year."
