There’s a new entry into the chicken sandwich wars. KFC is testing a new premium chicken sandwich from May 27 to June 21 at 15 locations in Orlando, Florida.

“We wanted a chicken sandwich that really lives up to our legacy as the fried chicken experts, and, let’s face it, ours wasn’t the one to beat,” said Andrea Zahumensky, chief marketing officer of KFC U.S., in the press release.

“We knew an upgrade was necessary, so we painstakingly selected each ingredient to create a bigger, better and more premium sandwich than ever. I think we’ve unlocked a chicken sandwich that won’t just compete – it’ll win with fried chicken lovers everywhere.”

The quick service restaurant (QSR) chain spent the last nine months perfecting the new sandwich to better contend with the competition, even working with its chicken processors to procure the right size filet.

The KFC Chicken Sandwich features an Extra Crispy hand-breaded chicken filet that is 20% larger than the one currently used on KFC chicken sandwiches between a buttery brioche bun. The sandwich, topped with thick and crisp pickles along with the Colonel’s mayo sauce, is available in classic and spicy.

The KFC Chicken Sandwich retails at $3.99, or as part of a combo meal that features a side of Secret Recipe fries and a medium beverage for $6.99.

The chicken sandwich craze

Consumer interest in chicken sandwiches rose to an all time high with the explosive release of the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich last year. The popularity of Popeyes sandwich ignited a viral war among consumers and put pressure on other brands to step up their chicken sandwich game.
