A man has been arrested in connection of a fatal shooting that took place at the Tyson Foods poultry plant in Camilla, Georgia.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Rondarius Radahn Williams, 31, Camilla, was shot at the Tyson plant around 3:55 p.m. on June 2. Williams was transported to the Mitchell County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The following day, the GBI reported that a suspect, Awayan Dominic Shivers, 25, Cairo, Georgia, had been arrested and charged with one count of malice murder, four counts of aggravated assault, and one count of possession of a firearm during commission of a crime. He is in custody at the Mitchell County Jail.

Shivers had apparently fled the scene, but was later taken into custody by the Thomasville Police Department. Camilla and Thomasville are located 39 miles apart along U.S. Highway 19.

“We’re deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our team members. Our thoughts are with Mr. Williams’ family, his friends and co-workers during this very difficult time. We are making arrangements for our corporate chaplains to provide counseling and support to family members and team members who want it,” Tyson Foods said in a statement.

Team members at the Camilla facility have already been dealing with human losses, as the company confirmed on April 17 that four workers at the plant died of complications related to COVID-19. The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), a union which has members who work at the Camilla plant, identified three of the four deceased employees as Elose Wills, Mary Holt and Annie Grant. Collectively, those three had been members of RWDSU for 75 years.

Tyson Foods announced in September 2019 that an expansion of the Camilla plant – obtained through the 2018 acquisition of Keystone Foods – had been completed. The expansion included the addition of a new line and about 100 new employees.
