Record reductions in poult placements could lead to a total production drop of between 200 million to 400 million pounds of turkey in 2020.

In a WATT Poultry Chat interview, Dr. Thomas Elam, president of FarmEcon LLC, said poult placements dropped by 12% in April and 11% in May and the downward trend is likely to continue in June and July. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is forecasting turkey production to drop by 200 million pounds but he projects it could be closer to 400 million if current trends persist.
