Global beef, chicken and pork production experienced its greatest two-year drop ever recorded between 2019 and 2020.
In a WATT Poultry Chat interview, Dr. Thomas Elam, president of FarmEcon LLC, shared U.S. Department of Agriculture data on global protein production with a focus on China. The drop in production was not related to the global COVID-19 pandemic, but rather the outbreak of African swine fever in China and its continuing fallout.
In the U.S., Elam said the data shows the production of chicken meat and turkey is recovering from the COVID shock of early in 2020.
