Canadian consumers can finally buy the Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen sandwich that launched a viral feud the U.S. in 2019.

"We couldn't be more excited to share our Popeyes Chicken Sandwich with our Canadian guests," Rob Manuel, General Manager of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Canada, said in a statement. "There is no better time than now to provide people with a bit of good news, and we're thankful for the opportunity to continue to grow our business and our fanbase here in Canada."

The quick service restaurant (QSR) chain launched the Chicken Sandwich on Monday, September 14, following a successful pilot program in Alberta and Southern Ontario. An online promotion on Twitter called The List gave 144 superfans access to the sandwich two days prior to the official launch.

"With more than three years of research, taste panels and market-tests invested in the development of our Chicken Sandwich we're confident that Canadians will make it a favorite menu item and embrace it as their own,” Manuel said.

The sandwich, which retails between $5.99 and $6.49 CAD, consists of an all-white meat chicken breast fillet marinated in an authentic blend of Louisiana seasonings and battered in buttermilk coating served on a buttery brioche bun with pickles and a choice of Classic or Spicy Mayonnaise.

Chicken sandwich frenzy

The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich made headlines after selling out less than two weeks after its U.S. launch in August 2019, resulting in a viral Twitter feud with rival chain Chick-fil-a that was quickly dubbed the chicken sandwich wars.

Popeyes relaunched the sandwich in November 2019, fueling a 34% sales growth for the brand that quarter.

Chicken sandwiches continue to be popular with consumers in 2020 after a banner year in 2019. Multiple QSRs, including KFC, McDonald’s, Golden Chicken, Big Boy and Mexican quick-service chain Del Taco, have all launched their own take on the fried chicken sandwich in the last few months.
