KFC Canada has a new entry for the battle of the Canadian chicken sandwiches.

The quick service restaurant (QSR) began selling the KFC Famous Chicken Chicken Sandwich nationwide earlier this month. The new sandwich is made with 100% Canadian farm raised chicken marinated in buttermilk and hand breaded in Extra Crispy seasoning and topped with sweet chunky pickles and creamy mayonnaise on a lightly toasted potato bun. A spicy version is also available.

It retails for $6.99 CAD and is only available in Canada.

"We've spent 75 years making the world's best-tasting fried chicken. It is what we're famous for," Samantha Redman, Chief Marketing Officer, KFC Canada, said in a statement. "The Famous Chicken Chicken Sandwich is everything you know and love about KFC – big taste, bold flavors, crispy golden chicken, but on a completely different level. We know everyone is going to love this sandwich."

“At KFC, we ensure that every bite is more delicious than the last – just the way the Colonel intended,” said Armando Carrillo, Innovation Manager, KFC Canada. “The KFC Famous Chicken Chicken Sandwich is the culmination of passion and determination and embodies what a famous chicken sandwich should taste like.”

The battle begins

Rival QSR Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen brought their popular chicken sandwich to Canadian consumers on September 14. The Popeyes sandwich consists of an all-white meat chicken breast fillet marinated in an authentic blend of Louisiana seasonings and battered in buttermilk coating served on a buttery brioche bun with pickles and a choice of Classic or Spicy Mayonnaise.

In the U.S., Popeyes made headlines in 2019 after selling out of their chicken sandwich in less than two weeks. The company also started a viral Twitter feud with chicken chain Chick-fil-A that U.S. consumers quickly dubbed the chicken sandwich wars.

KFC Canada clearly considers the Popeyes sandwich a viable threat, tweeting “When we hear about a certain 'famous' chicken sandwich, we wonder — is it really famous at all?" in August.
