Quick service brand Church’s Chicken announced their entry to the chicken sandwich wars with the debut of the new Church’s Chicken Sandwich.

“Right now, the [chicken category] is a share war. We have an opportunity to gain share because of the incrementality from our current, loyal customers, and getting more frequency from them,” Global Chief Marketing Officer Brian Gies, told Forbes.

“And this also provides an opportunity to open up an expanded target for those that were looking for something we didn’t have. The sandwich represents a pretty significant expansion opportunity for us. Being able to introduce a new, boneless platform is going to be welcomed by a lot of new guests that have maybe never tried us or haven’t been in a while.”

Chicken sandwiches continue to be popular with consumers in 2020 after a banner year in 2019. Multiple QSRs, including KFC, McDonald’s, Golden Chicken, Big Boy and Mexican quick-service chain Del Taco, have all launched their own take on the fried chicken sandwich in the last few months.

More about the new sandwich

The Church’s Chicken Sandwich features an all white meat chicken breast filet that is hand-breaded with the brand’s proprietary home-style seasoning with a hint of buttermilk and topped with crunchy pickles and creamy mayo on a toasted brioche bun.

The brand also offers a spicy version that swaps the creamy mayo for spicy mayo with a hint of Texas heat and adds Church’s signature jalapeño peppers on the side.

Both versions sell for $3.99 or as part of a combo meal for $5.99 and are available for order via drive-thru, carry-out and Order Ahead where available.

The sandwich is expected to be a permanent addition to the Church’s Chicken menu.

"We are experts in bone-in chicken, but the fan demand for that same level of quality and flavor in a boneless fried chicken sandwich from Church's was emphatic and persistent, so we got to work and delivered," Gies said in the press release.

Church’s Chicken was founded in 1952 in San Antonio, Texas. The chain has more than 919 locations in 28 U.S. states and is the ninth largest chicken chain in the country by sales.
