Tyson Foods has pledged to address systemic barriers to improving animal welfare and drive progress on key welfare issues by joining the Global Coalition for Animal Welfare (GCAW).

“GCAW represents a global multi-stakeholder organization focused on improving welfare outcomes for animals, which aligns very closely with what Tyson Foods’ animal welfare mission is. A multi-stakeholder organization allows us to participate with not only industry peers but also customers, so we can have an active dialogue as a group and discuss current issues in animal welfare. The founding members of GCAW were industry customers and we felt Tyson Foods would add a beneficial perspective to the organization,” a Tyson Foods spokesperson told WATTPoultry.

“We aim to continuously improve on our goals to ensure we are producing food in a way that is good for people, the planet and animals. We understand that animal welfare, the environment and worker safety are all interconnected, and we are focused on improving outcomes across all areas. As we learn more and technology continues to advance, we will continue to raise the bar.”

Tyson has developed several company initiatives dedicated to improving animal welfare. The Tyson Foods Broiler Welfare Research Farm is dedicated to studying ways to optimize technology, lighting, enrichment and other factors in poultry facilities. The company also puts on an annual Animal Welfare Summit, publishes a yearly Sustainability report and has an external Animal Welfare Advisory Panel made up of 13 animal welfare experts specializing in welfare, health, production and ethics.

Galvanizing an industry-led approach to welfare

Other recent GCAW members include Tesco plc, Maple Leaf Foods, The Cheesecake Factory and Hilton Food Group. The new additions join founding companies Aramark, Compass Group, Elior Group, IKEA Food Services, Nestlé, Sodexo and Unilever.

“With GCAW members now representing more of the world’s largest companies in food retail, food production and manufacturing, and food service, GCAW can galvanize know-how and welfare expertise to develop an industry-led approach to transforming the welfare of the most farmed species, including laying hens, broiler chickens and pigs,” Nicky Amos, Managing Director of Chronos Sustainability and Executive Director of GCAW, said in a statement.
