Global Food Partners and Impact Alliance have partnered to accelerate the production of cage-free eggs in Asia and provide financial incentives to producers meeting certain animal welfare standards.

“A growing number of egg producers are implementing cage-free production systems to meet growing market demand for cage-free eggs, both from individual consumers and large institutional buyers. More and more food businesses are pledging to only source cage-free eggs for their operations in Asia, including companies like Unilever, Minor Hotels, Nestle and Burger King,” said Jayasimha Nuggehalli, Chief Operating Officer of Global Food Partners.

“With the increasing demand for cage-free eggs in Asia, farmers are seeking support to transition from conventional cage systems to higher welfare cage-free production and take advantage of this growing market demand. “

More than 229 groceries stores and food companies have made public commitments to transition to 100% cage-free eggs in the past four years.

The Impact Incentives function similarly to a carbon credit program. Food businesses throughout Asia can purchase credits from certified cage-free egg producers to offset their current caged egg procedures, incentivizing cage-free egg production and helping companies meet animal welfare targets.

The program boosts the production of cage-free eggs and helps buyers support cage-free egg production without disrupting current contracts or supply chains.

Training and technical support

The program also provides training and technical support to help egg producers transition to cage-free production systems.

“Through Impact Partnerships, farmers receive direct support to transition to cage-free production systems,” Jayasimha Nuggehalli explained.

“The key benefits of participating in the Impact Partnership program are that farmers receive strategic support for transitioning to a new cage-free infrastructure, on-farm and technical support and training in best practice cage-free egg production, support in connecting with credible third-party auditors and certification bodies and increased market access.”

The Impact Alliance is a voluntary collaboration focused on increasing sustainability at the producer level across a range of commodities including leather and cotton, beef, soy and now eggs.
