Poultry farms in Russia produced approximately 30 billion eggs in the first nine months of this year, a year-on-year increase of 3.9%. There was also a year-on-year increase of 5.9% to 20 billion in sales of eggs by agricultural enterprises.

The egg yield per chicken at farms rose to 229 during the period, as compared to 228 in the corresponding period in 2008, while the volume of slaughtered poultry rose by 14.6% year-on-year, according to Interfax news agency.

Russia's Federal Customs Service reports that Russia imported poultry worth US$103 million in October, as compared with US$119 million in the same month last year. The annual decline in imports in October may have resulted from higher domestic poultry production. Poultry accounted for approximately 16.5% of Russian meat imports in October this year, as opposed to approximately 16.8% of meat imports in the same month in 2008.
