Whataburger has extended the run of its popular Spicy Chicken Sandwich with a twist. The sandwich now comes standard on a new brioche bun.

The Spicy Chicken Sandwich features a marinated, crispy chicken fillet topped with fresh, cool leaf lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mayo.

“Spicy chicken is a trend we love and one our customers have really embraced – that’s why we decided to keep the sandwich on the menu a little while longer,” says Whataburger Vice President of Marketing and Innovation Rich Scheffler.

“But this time, it’s even better, complete with a new brioche bun. We spent a lot of time working to get this right, and hope our fans continue to enjoy this flavor-filled sandwich in the new year.”

Chicken sandwich wars heat up in 2021

The battle between quick service chicken sandwiches remains hot in 2021. Last week, McDonald’s announced the launch of their long-awaited and much anticipated line of chicken sandwiches in February 2021.

The McDonald’s and Whataburger chicken sandwiches join a crowded field of contenders, including Zaxby’s, Wendy’s, KFC, Golden Chick, Big Boy, Church’s Chicken, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Chick-fil-A.

Originally planned as a limited-time offer

The Whataburger Spicy Chicken Sandwich was originally introduced in September 2020 as a limited-time offer.

At the time, the menu item was praised by critics and on social media, who said “I think the sandwich can compete for the top spot among fast spicy chicken sandwiches, right up there next to Popeyes' famed offering. All other food chains and their spicy sandwiches are sub-par — and maybe this is the Texan in me, but what Whataburger has done puts everyone else to shame."

Whataburger customers can order the sandwich for curbside pickup delivery with the Whataburger app or at Whataburger.com. The brand is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas and operates more than 840 locations in 10 states.
