A barn roof partially collapsed at an egg farm in Palmyra, Wisconsin, resulting in only minor injuries for workers inside the barn. The incident occurred at the same farm where a fire occurred in October 2020.

James Small, director of the Palmyra Public Safety Department stated on the agency’s Facebook page that around 6:45 a.m. on January 16, emergency workers responded to a report of an occupied building collapse at the Cold Spring Egg Farm at W2024 State Highway 59 in Palmyra.

Upon arrival, crews found that there was a partial collapse of a 60,000 square foot building. A corresponding photograph on the Facebook page showed roofs at the farm were covered with snow.

Small stated: “All employees were accounted for an able to leave the facility on their own. All injured parties were treated and released on scene.”

The collapse prompted a natural gas leak, which was mitigated by emergency responders, and later secured by WeEnergies, a Wisconsin utility company.

The incident remains under investigation and marks the second egg farm incident that Palmyra emergency personnel responded to within the past four months.

On October 3, 2020, the Palmyra Public Safety Department reported a fire at an egg farm. While the agency only listed that incident as occurring in the W2000 block of State Highway 59, WKOW reported it was the same farm. Several area residents commenting on the agency’s Facebook post also said it was the same farm.

In the fire incident, one building was deemed a total loss, but firefighters were able to protect all buildings that housed animals, and no birds were injured. Also, no firefighters or workers were injured. At the time, it was said that the egg farm fire was being investigated by the Palmyra Public Safety Department with assistance from the Wisconsin State Fire Marshal’s Office.

According to an earlier report from The Daily Jefferson County Union, Cold Spring Egg Farm is owned by S&R Egg Farm, which purchased the operation from Michael Foods in 1993.
