Filipino pork producers against further imports

Farmers want better prices to encourage local pork production

Reports from the Manila Buttetin say that Filipino pork producers are against further imports and instead they want their government to encourage domestic production by allowing local hog farmers more profit.

This comes as the government considers more pork imports to augment this season’s local production hurt by typhoon and diseases. Also, pork demand traditionally grows with the approaching holiday season.

Dr. Alfonso A. Uy, farmer and president of the Federation of the Filipino Chinese Chamber of the Philippines said the current farm gate price of P95 per kilo gives pig farmers a slim profit, but a farm gate price of P100 to P110 per kilo would encourage production.
