Merck Animal Health has completed the acquisition of health and environmental monitoring solutions company, Poultry Sense Ltd., from its founding stakeholders.

“Poultry Sense Ltd. offers a holistic solution to help advance animal health in poultry, which complements Merck Animal Health’s existing identification and monitoring technology that delivers real-time, actionable data and insights to help, improve or enhance animal management and health outcomes,” Taylor Barbosa, DVM, Executive Director, Global Poultry Team Leader, Merck Animal Health, said.

“We are excited about the possibilities of this new adventure as this acquisition provides us with an additional way to focus on the monitoring and management of poultry health and well-being.”

The technology uses battery-powered wireless sensors to capture data on weight, water usage, humidity, light, temperature and carbon dioxide in the poultry barn, providing farmers with insights on the housing environment and bird health and performance. Merck Animal Health first invested in Poultry Sense in March 2019.

Specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Investment in technology

Poultry Sense Ltd. is the first health technology brand focused exclusively on poultry to join Merck Animal Health Intelligence, a newly formed operating unit specializing in identification, traceability, monitoring solutions and services to help improve animal management and health outcomes.

“The acquisition of the Poultry Sense Ltd. product portfolio broadens Merck Animal Health’s portfolio of veterinary medicines, vaccines and health management solutions by expanding our offerings in enhanced technology for poultry farmers to track and analyze overall health performance for the life of the flock,” Barbosa said.

In 2019, Merck Animal Health acquired Allflex Livestock Intelligence and Biomark in the livestock and companion animal area, as well as Vaki, a leader in fish farming and wild fish conservation monitoring equipment. The company finalized the acquisition of Qualified Ag, an innovator in cattle data and analytics and IdentiGEN, dedicated to DNA-based animal traceability solutions for livestock and aquaculture.
