Technological advances over the past 50 years have made poultry production and processing more sustainable. Future innovations could continue to improve the efficiency of food production.

“Sustainability is a different way of saying I have secured my license to produce. It takes into account the business environment that we’re in, the resources that we use, the way we treat people and feed them, the way we treat animals if animal protein is involved,” explained Ruwan Berculo, Program Manager, FarmFit.

Long associated only with environmental issues, sustainability has transformed into a catch-all term that also encompasses animal welfare, social and other issues.

Focused on sustainable innovation

The FarmFit Event, a two-day networking event scheduled for late 2021/early 2022 in Northwest Europe, is designed to bring together young farmers and their potential partners in technology, distribution channels, food manufacturing and policy makers.

“The FarmFit event is focused on farmers who would like to define and develop within the social requirements for the next 30 years,” Zhenja Antochin, Senior Project Manager, FarmFit, said.

“Food manufacturers, retailers and all the producers and parties in the supply chain would like a sustainability story. Everybody has to talk sustainability, but if you talk food and sustainability, you need the farmers.”

The program consists of interactive sessions, where peers can engage in the “next-day” application of best practices to further develop and enhance food production.

“This event puts the farmer at the center, and it is really about connecting farmers with best practices,” added Berculo. “We believe it is absolutely important to focus on getting farmers in touch with others who are dealing with different societal challenges and that is what FarmFit is all about.”
