Shortly after The Humane League released its report, “The Price of a Slice,” which pressured U.S. pizza chains to issue public statements about their standards for chicken welfare, three chains announced policies to adopt the Better Chicken Commitment.

Cicis Pizza and Papa Murphy’s recently published chicken welfare policies on their websites, while Mellow Mushroom posted its policy on the company’s Facebook page.

The Papa Murphy’s and Mellow Mushroom statements reveal a commitment to meet standards of sourcing chicken from companies using broiler breeds with higher welfare outcomes, environmental enrichments, controlled atmosphere stunning and third-party audits.

The Cicis Pizza statement identified its two chicken suppliers as Perdue Farms and Tip Top Poultry. Cicis also praised the two companies for their commitments to broiler welfare. Cicis further said it will continue to work with those suppliers “to meet The Humane League’s long-term Better Chicken Commitment standards set for 2024, for 100% of the chicken we source.”

When the animal rights group first issued “The Price of a Slice,” it only identified Papa John’s, Blaze Pizza, Oath Pizza, The Star Pizza and &pizza as companies to commit to the Better Chicken Commitment.

Companies listed in the report that have not pledged to the Better Chicken Commitment include: Little Caesars, MOD, RoundTable, Pizza Hut, Peter Piper Pizza, Hungry Howie’s, Domino’s, Sbarro, Pizza Ranch, Donatos, Chuck E. Cheese, Godfather’s Pizza, Marco’s Pizza, Old Chicago, Fazoli’s, Mountain Mike’s Pizza and Uno Pizzeria & Grill.

Cicis Pizza was never named in the report.

WATTPoultry.com was made aware of the Price of a Slice report through an email sent from Julia Tomkins, public relations director for The Humane League.

Papa Murphy’s in July 2016 announced that all of the chicken it sources for its more than 1,500 stores were raised without antibiotics and were fed a vegetarian diet.
