Burglary suspect arrested inside Tyson Foods plant

A man suspected of burglarizing a credit union branch inside the Tyson Foods plant in Dakota City, Nebraska, has been arrested and charged.

A man suspected of burglarizing a credit union branch inside the Tyson Foods plant in Dakota City, Nebraska, has been arrested and charged.

According to a KTIV report, authorities were dispatched to the satellite branch of Siouxland Federal Credit Union, which is located inside the Tyson plant in Dakota City, during the early morning hours of June 11.

Upon arrival, officers found Mike-Akeen Obed, 21, Sioux City, in the immediate area of the credit union. They also found a red fabric bag with cash that had apparently been taken from the bank vault. The amount of money in that bag was not disclosed.

Obed was booked into the Dakota County Jail. He faces charges of burglary, theft by unlawful taking, criminal mischief, criminal trespassing and possession of a burglar’s tools.

The Tyson plant in Dakota City is part of the Tyson Fresh Meats business, which processes beef. It employs a workforce of 4,300 and when at full capacity, the plant produces enough beef in one day to feed 18 million people, according to the company. Operations were paused at the facility during part of 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Dakota City facility was honored by the North American Meat Institute (NAMI) earlier in 2021 through NAMI’s Environmental Recognition Awards Program. It was one of 35 Tyson Foods facility to earn such an honor.

Tyson Foods is the largest broiler company in the United States and the fifth largest turkey producer, according to the WATTPoultry.com Top Companies Database. The company, headquartered in Springdale, Arkansas, is also a major producer of pork and beef products, and it recently entered the plant-based protein sector.

Siouxland Federal Credit Union, according to its website, was chartered in Nebraska in 1967 and was chartered federally in 1988. The credit union serves more than 18,000 members in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota.
