Conagra announced their commitment in 2016 to work toward a supply of 100% cage-free eggs, alongside other companies, in its U.S. operations by 2025. Now, they plan to meet this goal one year earlier than expected.

On June 28, 2021, the Chicago-based company announced their strategy to convert 100% of its egg usage to cage-free by the end of 2024, one year earlier than expected. The plan includes conversion of approximately 20% of its egg usage to cage-free by the end of 2021, 45-50% by the end of 2022, 60-70% by the end of 2023, and 100% by the end of 2024.

Representatives from Conagra have spoken out on the topic. Chris Stockwell, Senior Vice President and Chief Procurement Officer, stated “This decision is part of ConAgra’s ongoing commitment to the humane and safe treatment of animals.” Katya Hantel, Senior Director of Sustainability, stated “Operating ethically and employing responsible animal welfare practices is important for our customers, our investors and our company, and we're proud to accelerate our progress on this important issue.”

Conagra continues to receive encouragement from animal welfare supporters. Josh Balk, Vice President of farm animal protection for the Humane Society of the United States, stated “Consumers want animals in the food supply to be treated better, and we applaud Conagra for accelerating its progress in that direction.”

Cage-free requirements have expanded to nine states and over 200 retailers and companies. States making the commitment include Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Michigan, Washington, Oregon, California, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. A few companies that have made the commitment include Dunkin’ Donuts, Hilton Hotels, Kellogg, Nestlé, Cal-Maine Foods, and Carrefour eggs.
