Wundereggs are a ready-to-eat (RTE) plant-based food product designed to look and taste like hard-boiled eggs created by the company Crafty Counter, best known for selling a plant-based chicken nugget.

“Wundereggs are very similar in taste and texture to chicken eggs,” claimed Hema Reddy, CEO & founder, Crafty Counter. Wundereggs contain less protein than conventional eggs. However, pea protein is being explored as a potential option to change that, as long as taste and texture are not compromised.

The ingredients

In the faux egg white and yolk portions of Wundereggs, the ingredient list includes water, cashews, almonds, probiotics, coconut milk, and less than 2% of nutritional yeast, organic turmeric extract, agar, and black salt. The specific probiotic strain has not been finalized yet due to clarification of the effects of the high-pressure-processing (HPP) step used to preserve the product, explained Reddy. HPP is expected to give the product a 90-120 days shelf life under refrigeration.

The eggs will be sold in vacuum packs of two and retail for approximately $5 per pack. The marketing strategy is to utilize influencers on popular platforms that have been popular in the plant-based movement and are willing to put the product on their social media platforms. Reddy predicts that Wundereggs will be available for purchase on the Crafty Counter website in Q4.

The plant-based market is gaining steam, as many large companies are participating in the trend. A few large players include Hormel Foods, JBS, Smithfield Foods and Nestlé.
