Tyson Foods plans to close its prepared foods facility in Jefferson, Wisconsin.

“As part of ongoing efforts to focus on the strategic plans of our business, we plan to discontinue operations at our Jefferson, Wisconsin, plant in mid-September,” the company said in a statement emailed to WATT Global Media.

“the closure is due to a combination of factors including the changing product needs of our customers. This was a very tough decision, but because business needs have changed, we’ve decided to take these steps in order to continue focusing on and investing in strategic growth priorities where we have a competitive advantage.”  

Gary Mickelson, spokesman for Tyson Foods, said no poultry products are produced at the plant in Jefferson.

According to a report from the Daily Jefferson County Union, there are 62 people employed at the plant, 53 of which hold hourly positions. The company stated that it is making a variety of resources available to the impacted employees to help them find new employment.

A publicly traded company, Tyson Foods on August 9 announced the financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2021. The company, headquartered in Springdale, Arkansas, reported a net income of $733 million and net sales of $12.5 billion.

During a media call that coincided with the release of the financial results, Tyson Foods President and CEO Donnie King said that the company was in the process of building 12 new plants – five of which will be in the United States and seven of them in other countries.

Tyson Foods is the largest chicken producer in the United States and the fifth largest turkey producer. It is also one of the nation’s four largest beef producer and a major producer of pork. The company is also expanding its presence in the plant-based protein sector.
