BRF is partnering with energy company Intrepid Participacoes SA to construct a solar energy self-generation plant in the state of Ceara.

In an announcement to the market posted on the BRF Investor Relations webpage, BRF stated that the two companies entered a 15-year-renewable energy power purchase agreement. Combined with BRF’s current clean energy portfolio, the new agreement will enable the company to obtain 88% of its electricity from clean and renewable sources in Brazil, advancing its goals toward improved sustainability as outlined in BRF’s 2030 Vision.

The plant to be constructed will have an installed capacity of 320 megawatt peak generation.

The project is estimated to cost BRL1.1 billion (US$210 million), and BRF will directly invest about BRL50 million to be disbursed during the project’s development.

Operations at the new solar energy plant are expected to begin by 2024.

The announcement to the market, which is dated September 16 and is signed by BRF Chief Financial and Investor Relations Officer Carlos Alberto Bezerra de Moura, stated that the company will continue to look for other opportunities to invest in alternative sources of clean energy.

BRF’s announcement related to the solar energy project comes approximately one month after the company revealed another clean energy partnership project. That project involves a partnership with AES Brasil Energia, in which the two companies reached a deal to fund the construction of an energy self-generation wind farm complex in Cajuina, Rio Grade do Norte, which will have an installed capacity of 160 million megawatts.

BRF, formerly known as Brasil Foods, was created through the merger of Sadia and Perdiagao. The diversified animal protein producer is Brazil’s second largest broiler producer and is also involved in turkey and pork production.

During the past year, BRF slaughtered 2.19 billion broilers, according to the WATTPoultry.com Top Companies Database.
