The International Egg Foundation’s (IEF) goal is to help provide people living in developing countries with more access to eggs to fight malnutrition, while also providing them with knowledge from industry professionals to produce their own eggs.
To help achieve this, the IEF has created and published a production manual for emerging commercial egg producers that provides fundamental advice on the safe and efficient production of eggs.
The 42-page manual contains chapters titled The Importance of Biosecurity, Farm set-up, Introduction to Farm Management, and Introduction to Management of the Egg. It also covers topics including site selection, housing systems, lighting, water management, pest control, and more. It goes on to explain that farms with poor biosecurity and sanitation practices will likely have disease and need medical interventions, which will reduce performance and profits.
“Our main aim as a charity is to enable those in need to improve the lives of their families and local communities, today and in the future,” stated Tim Lambert, an IEF Chairmen. “Through our Global Egg Schools program, we have identified fundamental areas where knowledge is commonly limited, such as biosecurity and layer management.”
“It has been our experience that once best practices in these areas are shared, farmers have been able to significantly improve their outputs and profits. By helping them to produce more efficiently, not only do the farmers and their families gain direct access to high-quality nutrition through consumption of a portion of their output, but they can also support the nutritional status of their local community through egg sales,” explained Lambert.
The IEF was established in 2014 by the International Egg Commission as a charitable foundation to help implement the United Nations Sustainable Development goals and increase egg production and consumption in underdeveloped countries.
