Cranswick’s poultry site in Hull, UK, received PAS 2060 Carbon Neutral specification, bringing the company one step closer to its Net Zero by 2040 commitment.

“Over the last five years, the team have worked tirelessly to integrate sustainable practices across our operations, and I'm delighted to confirm that we've achieved PAS 2060 Carbon Neutral status,” Andrew Gleadow, Managing Director of Cranswick Country Foods Poultry, said.

“We're passionate about playing our part in Cranswick's mission to be the world's most sustainable meat business – showcasing that a successful business is a sustainable business."

This certification reflects the site’s progress to minimize carbon emissions, put in place in 2016, and approves the team’s plan to further reduce emissions. Decarbonization products – including lighting efficiency projects, energy-efficient motors standard on all new machinery, zero waste to landfill and a move to a fully renewable energy tariff – have resulted in a 45% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to the 2017 baseline.

In addition, the Hull site leadership team received accredited climate literacy training over the past five years, with support from an engaged workforce.

Cranswick plans to offset any emissions that have not yet been eliminated with a portfolio of strategic projects including Portel-Pará REDD amazon rainforest protection and community investment project, a wind energy project in Maharashtra, India, and Southern Cardamom REDD+ in Cambodia.

In addition, the PAS 2060 standard requires companies to create a future emissions reduction plan. To meet this goal, Cranswick has created a roadmap to upgrade refrigerant systems, achieve ISO 14001 accreditation, switch to electric forklifts, install solar panels and review the feasibility of heat pumps.

In July, Cranswick announced that work on a new premium breaded poultry facility is Hull is progressing well. The overall investment in that plant is GBP30 million (US$41.4 million), with an incremental investment of GBP5 million for the expansion, which includes a third production line.

Seven other Cranswick sites have already achieved carbon neutrality. Cranswick, according to the WATTPoultry.com Top Companies Database, is one of the largest food producers in the United Kingdom. The company is a supplier of fresh pork, chicken, cooked meats and other food products. It slaughtered 26 million chickens during the past year.
