Senator proposes food safety bill

Producers would assure products are pathogen-free under act

According to reports, Senator Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., put forth legislation requiring food producers to ensure their products are pathogen-free.

The Processed Food Safety Act would amend the Poultry Products Inspection Act, the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act barring food sales without a pathogen-free certification.

The bill would also require specific labeling of cuts of meat be listed on packaging. All added coloring, synthetic flavorings and spices added to the product would also be labeled for consumers.
