The USPOULTRY Foundation awarded a $7,900 student recruiting grant to Pennsylvania (Penn) State University. The grant was made possible in part by an endowing foundation gift from Perdue Farms and was presented by Mike Levengood, vice president, chief animal care officer and farmer relationship advocate at Perdue Farms and vice chairman of the USPOULTRY board of directors, to Phillip Clauer, assistant teaching professor of poultry science at Penn State University. Joining in the presentation were several poultry science students.
The grant funds will be used to increase recruiting visibility, introduce potential students to the Poultry Science program, and continue support for regional training, 4-H programs and contests. Other efforts include Penn State’s Youth Poultry 101 program for youth 12-19 years of age, volunteer adult leaders and FFA instructors. The program expands the youths’ knowledge of poultry topics and helps them better understand the opportunities in the poultry industry in a hands-on educational setting.
The USPOULTRY Foundation board approved student recruiting grants totaling $302,510 to 26 colleges and universities across the United States with a poultry science department or industry-related degree program. The USPOULTRY Foundation provides annual recruiting funds to colleges and universities to attract students to its poultry programs. The grants are made possible by gifts to the foundation from companies, individuals and families, in addition to funds earned over the years at the International Poultry Expo, part of the International Production & Processing Expo.
