Planterra has expanded its OZO brand of plant-based proteins with the introduction of the True Bite Plant-Based Chicken Cutlet and Plant-Based Chicken Shreds.

The two products differentiate themselves from other plant-based options with a flavor and texture comparable to whole muscle chicken, according to a press release from the brand.

The majority of meat alternatives currently available on the market are designed to taste like beef or pork. This is because it is much more difficult to mimic the taste and texture of poultry.

The plant-based foods market is set to make up 7.7% of the global protein market by 2030, with a value of $162 billion, according to a recent report from Bloomberg Intelligence. Plant-based chicken alternatives are especially primed for significant growth in the next 12-18 months.

More about the plant-based chicken cutlets

The True Bite Chicken Cutlets and Shreds also serve as an excellent source of protein, with more fiber and less fat than traditional proteins. The plant-based chicken products are pre-seasoned in a choice of garlic & herb, sea salt & pepper, BBQ and rotisserie-style and cook in just 10 minutes.

True Bite Chicken Cutlets and Shreds will be available in the fresh meat aisle of retail stores nationwide beginning in 2022.

"As time goes on, the demand for protein will only continue to increase and the world won't be able to satisfy that demand with meat-based products alone," Darcey Macken, Planterra Foods CEO, said in a statement.

"With chicken being the most popular protein in the United States, it was clear we needed to create a plant-based option where people don't have to sacrifice this mealtime favorite and have a healthier and more sustainable option. Planterra is always aiming to provide delicious, sustainable solutions that are good for people and the planet, and our True Bite Chicken Cutlets and Shreds will do just that."

Planterra is a division of beef and pork processing company JBS. According to the WATTPoultry.com Top Companies Database, JBS is the world’s largest protein supplier and the second largest food company. It also ranks first globally as a poultry producer, having slaughtered 4.04 billion broilers during the past year.

Earlier this year, JBS purchased European plant-based protein company Vivera. Vivera offers products in more than 25 countries, with relevant market share in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Germany. Included in the acquisition are three production facilities and a research and development center, all located in the Netherlands.
