Vietnamese man dies of bird flu

Authorities say he contracted the disease from duck blood

A 23-year-old Vietnamese man is confirmed to have died of avian influenza in Dien Bien Phu town in northern Vietnam, reported a local newspaper, Thanh Nien.

A test shows that the victim was infected with H5N1 virus, the report said. This is the first recorded case in the country in nearly six months.

The nation’s Ministry of Health reported that the victim ate duck blood pudding a week before he fell sick with flu symptoms and then died of pneumonia on November 28, according to Thanh Nien.

So far this year, five people in Vietnam have died after contracting avian flu. This brings the national toll of the disease to 57 deaths since 2003, according to the report.
