Cage-free conversions and how they will affect the industry was a common theme discussed throughout the year. Leaders in the industry, such as Cal-Maine Foods, frequently addressed how California’s Proposition 12 and cage-free legislation throughout the U.S. will have major effects on the egg market, and what the industry will need to do to meet the demand.

Other aspects affected the egg market this year outside of the cage-free egg movement. High corn and soybean prices have increased the cost of feed significantly, while COVID-19 has continued to have an impact on the workforce and the supply chain.

However, consumer demand for eggs continues to increase, and the egg industry continues to meet that demand. In 2022, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) expects approximately 400 million dozen eggs to be exported. The USDA also estimates U.S. egg consumption to reach approximately 9.4 billion dozen by 2030. Additionally, the United Egg Producers stated that the drop in egg consumption per capita was not due to a decrease in demand, but a decrease in production due to COVID- 19 related issues.
