A digital transformation is having a radical effect on the ways the industry produces and distributes poultry products throughout the supply chain.

“We have all seen huge disruptions in the food and beverage industries throughout the last few years, including the pandemic and now everyone is talking about sustainability. What we also saw is that the successful companies were digitally enabled,” explained Marcel Koks, Industry & Solution Strategy Director of Food & Beverage, Infor.

During Reaping the Benefits of Digital Transformation in Food & Beverage, Koks shared how the smart use of data can help the poultry industry better aid customers, automate decisions, increase food safety and improve transparency and sustainability.

For many consumers, the term sustainability now means more than just the environmental impact of a product. It also encompasses animal welfare, social and other issues. There is also a growing desire for transparency in food production among consumers who want to understand the entire process from farm to fork.

Why the poultry industry should go digital

Operational productivity, channel progression and growth, food safety and compliance, product innovation and transparency and supply chain complexity are the five main drivers for change within the food and beverage industry. 

“A lot of companies are in survival mode,” Koks said, noting that these companies track data using paper and in unconnected systems which makes it hard to prioritize new product ideas and other priorities.

A lack of digitalization can challenge companies in their quest toward the next level of quality, operational efficiency, sustainability and transparency. In addition, these systems are not agile enough to keep up with changes to consumer demand and within the marketplace.

Smart technology, automation can improve competitiveness

Comparatively, successful companies rely on smart technology and automation to improve processes and competitiveness. For example, precision farming devices use the internet of things (IoT) to optimize feeding and animal health, measure storage conditions and for supply chain transparency.

“The successful organizations are using technology to innovate. These organizations were able to respond to disruptions by really innovating,” Koks added. “It’s really about connecting the dots between farm to fork in a digital platform.”
