Southern States plant named AFIA’s Feed Mill of the Year

Cargill Mill is runner-up

The American Feed Industry Association and Feedstuffs have designated a Southern States feed mill in Cleveland, N.C., as the 2009 Feed Mill of the Year. The annual award recognizes operational excellence, safety, quality and regulatory compliance.

The Cleveland mill, which has been in operation since 1978 and owned by Southern States since 1985, produced 480 formulas totaling 90,500 tons of feed last year, primarily for beef cattle, horses and poultry. The mill is certified by the AFIA’s Safe Feed/Safe Food Certification Program and its annual sales are more than $30 million.

The runner-up in this year’s competition was Cargill Mill in Harrisonburg, Va., which provides 7,500 tons of feed each week to poultry growers.
