Thailand-based agri-food company Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods) plans to increase its production of cage-free eggs to 20 million in 2022, an increase of 4 million eggs from 2021.

According to Somkid Wannalukkhee, CP Foods senior vice president of egg business in Thailand, the company’s projection is in line with its Animal Welfare Policy and will help accomplish goals in its 2030 Sustainability in Action strategy. Additionally, the predicted production growth aligns with the company’s announcement in 2019 concerning plans to expand into foreign markets.

“Cage-free farming is one of the animal welfare movement’s biggest successes to strengthen food safety standards in egg products for consumers and promote sustainable consumption,” stated Wannalukkhee.

In 2017, CP Foods announced its plans to convert all its layer operations in Thailand to cage-free production. Since 2018, the company’s Wang Somboon farm, located in central Thailand, has been producing cage-free eggs. The location includes 12 layer houses and generates approximately 10 million eggs per year. In 2019, the Wang Somboon facility was deemed the first cage-free farm in the country certified for cage-free production by the Department of Livestock Development

CP Foods’ initiatives

In April 2018, CP Foods released its animal welfare policy, which incorporates the Five Freedoms.

During the policy’s publication, Sooksunt Jiumjaiswanglerg, CEO of the company’s Agro Industrial sector, stated, “This policy will be complied with by all of CPF’s business around the world in the pursuit of excellent animal welfare management. We also hope that our success and experiences will be passed on to our partners in livestock and aquaculture business.”

In September 2021, CP Foods released its 2030 Sustainability in Action strategy which comprises three pillars: food security, a self-sufficient society and a balance of nature. Additionally, the company’s sustainability initiative satisfies the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
