Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022 to the world’s horror which motivated multiple countries, organizations and companies to impose sanctions and cut ties with Russia and to provide aid to Ukraine.

One of these companies is Finnebrogue which announced on February 28 that it will be changing the name of its Chicken Kiev product to Chicken Kyiv and will be donating 50% of profits of said product to Ukrainian relief efforts. Chicken Kyiv is sold primarily in U.K. supermarkets like Waitrose and Ocado.

The company will also be donating an immediate £10,000 (13,162.13 USD) to UNICEF and the Red Cross.

According to Chief Strategy Officer Jago Pearson, “the world is appalled by the disgraceful events being perpetrated by the Putin regime in Ukraine. All our hearts go out to the Ukrainian people as they defend their homeland and stand up for the principles of self-determination and free, liberal democracy.

“So many of us in the U.K. feel utterly helpless, but still determined to do what little we can. That’s why at Finnebrogue we are donating to the humanitarian effort and renaming our Better Naked Chicken Kyiv in recognition of the Ukrainian people’s brave defense of their proud nation.”

The original name Kiev is the name of the Ukrainian capital when the country was under Soviet rule but was changed to Kyiv after gaining independence in 1991 and aligning with the West in 2014. There was a renaming campaign led by Ukraine’s government in 2018 that spread #KyivnotKiev since the name Kiev is heavily associated with Soviet control.
