Maple Leaf Foods Inc. announced that the construction of its new value-added poultry plant in London, Ontario, is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022.
“Pursuing these optimization opportunities is part of Maple Leaf Foods' ongoing strategy of building its strong, competitive and efficient poultry value chain– leveraging best in class technologies, processes and ingenuity to deliver nutritious food,” according to the announcement.
Changes at existing plants
Once construction is complete at the London facility, products ready to be processed will be moved into the London plant from the already operating Schomberg and Bradford plants – a process which should be finished by the end of 2023.
“Once the transition is completed, the Bradford plant will continue to operate with a new focus on value–added opportunities, and the Schomberg plant will be shut down. The company deeply values the work of its team members at the Schomberg plant and expects to identify opportunities at other plants within the Maple Leaf network for those who are impacted as a result of the transition,” the announcement stated.
The announcement comes as part of the company’s growth initiative to expand its network and its prepared foods production. At the end of 2021, the company bought a facility in Indianapolis, Indiana and has been renovating it to increase tempeh production. That facility is expected to be operational in the first half of 2022.
In an article in October 2021, WATT Global Media also reported on the $182 million expansion of the company’s Winnipeg plant which added 73,000 square feet and 350 new jobs.
