BRF and AES Brasil Energia finalize wind farm project

As of this week, Brazilian food processing company BRF S.A. and green energy company AES Brasil Energia officially closed on their joint venture– Potengi Holdings S.A. – to build a wind farm.

As of this week, Brazilian food processing company BRF S.A. and green energy company AES Brasil Energia officially closed on their joint venture– Potengi Holdings S.A. – to build a wind farm.  


The wind farm will be in the Complexo Eólico Cajuína, Rio Grande do Norte on Brazil's east coast and will have an energy capacity of 160 million megawatts and will generate 80 million megawatts. 


According to a statement released by BRF, the “operation is scheduled to start in 2023, and the actual supply of power in 2024.” The total estimated cost for this project is approximately R$905 million (USD 176.7 million).


This project is part of BRF’s sustainability initiative– 2030 Vision, which was launched in December 2020. According to the company’s sustainability policy, “BRF's processes and products must be executed in compliance with the environmental

laws and with reference to national and international standards while striving for the

continuous improvement of environmental management.”


BRF plans to have net zero gas emissions by 2040 and the company also joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a collaboration that assists companies in reducing greenhouse gasses. 


Along with SBTi, BRF has a long list of associations with Brazilian and international organizations focused on social and environmental justice including but not limited to:

  • The Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS)

  • Pacto Global 

  • The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

  • Programa Brasileiro GHG Protocol

  • Companies for the Climate 


BRF is Brazil’s second largest broiler producer having slaughtered 2.19 billion broilers during the past year, according to the Poultry International Top Companies survey, and is also involved in turkey and pork production.
