The cage-free layer model farm and training center dubbed the “Cage-free Innovation and Welfare Hub” is under construction. Construction for the project started on June 28, 2022 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

The goal of the center is to optimize cage-free laying hen management under Indonesian conditions and demonstrate the best farming practices for the housing type. To support the center, an industry consortium was created to provide expertise in the production method.

The consortium comprises a group of industry stakeholders who will provide products or services to support the center’s training and research.

The members include Singapore-based consulting firm Global Food Partners, the Netherlands agricultural university Aeres University of Applied Sciences, Indonesian research university Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Faculty of Animal Sciences, hotel location Yogyakarta Marriott, poultry housing equipment manufacturer Vencomatic, animal breeding company Hendrix Genetics/PT Indonesia and lighting solutions manufacturer Hato.

The consortium hopes that the center will bring together producers and other experts to improve the egg industry in Indonesia and other countries in Asia.

The UGM, Faculty of Animal Sciences will provide training, as well as land, buildings, equipment, staff, daily maintenance and other resources. Global Food Partners is designing the course content and plans to provide outside technical expertise, as well as ongoing support.

Jayasimha Nuggehalli, Global Food Partners COO and co-founder, said “Our Hub and Consortium are the first of their kind in Indonesia and Asia, and allow us to provide the support that farmers need to remain competitive as consumers in the region and world increasingly prefer cage-free eggs. We couldn’t have asked for better partners and look forward to all we can accomplish through the Consortium to create a cage-free ecosystem in which local producers can thrive.”

Dr. Budi Guntoro, UGM Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science, said, “We look forward to hosting this training center, which will serve as a key learning tool for cage-free egg production for the community, especially students, lecturers, researchers, farmers and industry, not only from Indonesia but from abroad.”
