Tyson Foods employee killed in loading dock accident

An Iredell County man died after being struck by a tractor-trailer rig at the Tyson Foods processing plant in Harmony, North Carolina.

An Iredell County man died after being struck by a tractor-trailer rig at the Tyson Foods processing plant in Harmony, North Carolina. 

According to a report from WHKY, Jason W. Bare of Harmony was hit by a tractor-trailer rig that was backing toward a loading dock and died at the scene. The accident was reported to 911 at 6:48 p.m. on July 29.

Both Bare and the driver, Gary Wayne Davidson of Statesville, were Tyson employees.

Harmony and Sheffield-Calahaln Fire Departments, Iredell EMS and the North Iredell Rescue Squad all responded. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was also notified.

"A team member passed away after being struck by a backing vehicle at our Harmony, North Carolina, facility late Friday evening. We’re working with local authorities to investigate what happened and appreciate the quick response and support of local emergency responders. Our thoughts and prayers are with the team member's family, friends and co-workers; our Chaplains and support personnel have been made available to all who were affected by his loss," Tyson Foods said in a statement.

In April 2022, a Tyson Foods employee was injured in a conveyer plant accident at a bacon plant in Omaha, Nebraska. According to an emailed statement from the company, the worker was wiping down a conveyor when the accident occurred, and that person was “taken to a local hospital for treatment.”

In addition, two Tyson Foods employees were hospitalized with burns following an accident at the company’s water treatment plant in New Holland, Pennsylvania in April. According to Lancaster Online, the local news for Lancaster County, the employees were splashed with sulfuric acid. One suffered a burn to the arm and the other to the face.

 In January 2022, a Tyson Foods plant in Storm Lake, Iowa accidentally dumped 16,500 gallons of wastewater into a lake, most likely due to pump failure.
