Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch celebrated the completion of its Blue Springs Egg Farm with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house event on August 11, 2022. The new cage-free facility is located in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania and sits on 335 acres.

The two-year construction project includes eight poultry barns that will house over two-million-layer hens, an egg processing plant and a fertilizer pelletizing/ storage building. The producer will use technology that processes its hen litter into organic fertilizer for farmers.

“We will use the most innovative technology in our industry to organically process hen litter into fertilizer, which eliminates odors, flies and provides nutrient-rich organic fertilizer for farmers. Our innovative design of the entire property ensures it blends in with the surrounding typography to ensure minimal impact on the environment and overall aesthetic of the area,” stated Melanie Herbruck Jones, owner and general manager of the new facility earlier this year.

Blue Springs Egg Farm will begin operations in Fall 2022 and employ almost 200 people when fully functioning.

Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch’s CEO Greg Herbruck said, “As a fourth-generation family business, we integrated our core values into every aspect of Blue Springs. This facility incorporates leading sustainability practices and uses the most innovative technology in the poultry industry.”

The egg producer originally announced its plans in 2016 to build the new facility in the Mercersburg area. In March 2019, a state grant was awarded to make road improvements in the area surrounding the new facility.

Pennsylvania congressman John Joyce added, “In addition to creating nearly 200 new jobs and bringing more than $100 million in economic development to Franklin County, Herbruck’s Blue Springs Egg Farm will provide families across the country with healthy, nutritious food produced right here in Pennsylvania.”

Herbruck’s Poultry Farm announced it on track to be completely cage free by 2024 in March 2022. Almost 80% of its production is already cage free, putting the company on track to meet its own deadline.
