The International Egg Foundation (IEF) has released a training video titled “The Fundamentals of Successful Egg Production” to support egg farmers in low- and middle-income countries in adopting best practices and achieving long-term productivity.

The short film focuses on how egg producers can successfully produce eggs in hot and humid areas, and gives practical and actionable advice put together by egg industry experts.

The video was shot in Eswatini, South Africa, and is free to view. The IEF recommends that the resource be used alongside its Egg Production Manual, launched last year.

Experts who worked on the project include Roger Pelissero, agricultural organization Egg Farmers of Canada Chairman, Maganda Muchenje, humanitarian organization Heart for Africa Farm Manager and Sifiso Nkambule Heart for Africa Egg Farm Supervisor.

Tim Lambert, IEF Chairman, directed the film and hopes the resource will help emerging small and medium sized egg producers develop sustainable practices and improve the nutritional status of local communities.

“Our ultimate goal at IEF is to provide better lives for people through the power of the humble egg,” said Lambert. “The expert training covers the fundamental steps required to produce quality eggs in a safe, sustainable manner from site selection to housing systems, feed storage and record keeping.”

In August 2022, another training opportunity was launched to educate egg farmers in the Philippines on animal welfare and cage-free farming, rearing practices, monitoring bird health and behavior, biosecurity, disease prevention and layer productivity.

The resource titled “Cage-free Egg Production, the Basics” is the result of a collaboration between consulting firm Global Food Partners (GFP), the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) and agricultural organization Batangas Egg Producers Multipurpose Cooperative (BEPCO). The initiative will help support producers in responding to the growing demand for cage-free eggs in the country.
