To meet increasing consumer demand for animal welfare, meat production companies are looking for ways to get ahead of their competitors in the animal welfare arena. And Charoen Pokphand Foods PLC (CP Foods) has taken a step forward in that regard and become the first Thai company to receive the Farm F1rst certification.

“LR Farm F1rst lifts Thailand’s chicken production process to the international level,” said Dr. Payungsak Somyanontanakul DVM, the vice president for food standard as president of CP Foods animal welfare committee. “Animal welfare, workers’ safety and occupational health and environmental-friendly management approach can be traced throughout the supply chain, to assure global consumers of food security.”

The company carries out its animal welfare policies by following the Five Freedoms Principles:

  • Freedom from hunger and thirst
  • Freedom from discomfort
  • Freedom from pain, injury or disease
  • Freedom to express normal behavior
  • Freedom from fear and distress

The Five Freedoms were derived from the U.K.’s 1965 Brambell Report on livestock welfare. One way CP Foods meets one of these principles is to include toys and accessories that encourage normal chicken behavior.

The company has also received certification from QS, the leading standard for food safety in Germany; Global Gap, internationally recognized standards of good agricultural practices; and Raised without Antibiotics.

What is Farm F1rst?

According to its website, Farm F1st is a globally accredited certification for companies committed to animal, bird and worker welfare. Receiving this certification, Somyanontanakul said, will aid CP Foods in building trust with trade partners like the EU, the U.K. and Japan.
