Two new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were confirmed in a table egg producer and a flock of duck breeders in California, as well as a flock of gamebirds in South Dakota. HPAI was also reported in commercial poultry flocks located in the Manitoba and Saskatchewan provinces in Canada.

California

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), HPAI affected an independent table egg producer flock of 43,000 birds in Del Norte county and 12,000 birds in a commercial duck breeder flock in Monterey. Both cases are in California.

Both counties have been quarantined to prevent the further spread of avian influenza, the California Department of Food & Ag reported.

In 2022, HPAI in commercial poultry has been confirmed in the following California counties: Butte, Calaveras, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Fresno, Sacramento and Tuolumne.

South Dakota

APHIS also confirmed the presence of HPAI in a flock of 500 commercial upland gamebirds in Brule County, South Dakota, with 500 birds impacted.

The case, reported October 6, is the second in the county to have a confirmed case of avian influenza in 2022. HPAI was previously detected in a commercial turkey flock of 55,100 birds on March 30.

Canada

Five new cases of HPAI were confirmed in Canadian poultry on October 5 and 6.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported three new cases in the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne, Manitoba, one new case in the Rural Municipality of De Salaberry, Manitoba and one new case in the Rural Municipality of Lumsden, Saskatchewan.

The Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne has detected six cases of HPAI in 2022. The previous case was confirmed on September 28th. This is the first case detected for both the Rural Municipality of De Salaberry and the Rural Municipality of Lumsden.

Information concerning the flock sizes and types for these HPAI cases has not been released.
