Wingstop relaunched its new chicken sandwich, available in 12 mouthwatering flavors such as lemon pepper, mango habanero or hickory-smoke barbeque, nationwide

“Over the past few weeks, we’ve been hard at work with our supplier partners scaling the level of supply needed to meet the incredible demand for this product,” a spokesperson for Wingstop said.

It features a cooked-to-order, hand sauced-and-tossed chicken breast dipped in a choice of flavors and topped with a toasted bun and crunchy pickles. The chicken sandwich is available a la carte for $5.49 or as a combo with hand-cut fries and a drink for $7.99.

A variety of celebrities and influencers will review the sandwich, including Rick Ross, Soulja Boy, Daym and Trey Kennedy. Rick Ross previously helped Wingstop promote their Thighstop virtual brand.

Initial launch

The sandwich was initially added to menus on August 30 following successful local tests earlier this year in Columbus, Ohio, Fresno, California, Las Vegas, Nevada and Orlando, Florida.

The fast casual brand sold out four weeks of planned supply for the chicken sandwich in less than six days, exceeding sales expectations by 300% and beating out Super Bowl Sunday transaction levels, according to a press release.

“The launch of our Wingstop Chicken Sandwich in 12 flavors exceeded our expectations on all fronts," CEO Michael Skipworth said.

Apparently in celebration of the popular chicken sandwich, the fast casual brand also tweeted out an expletive that generated an online uproar with 490,700 likes and 91,000 retweets. Wingstop later gave this explanation for the original tweet: "our 12 new chicken sandwiches are so good, they're SOLD OUT."

The last time a chicken foodservice brand ran short of a newly-released product was the 2019 debut of the Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen chicken sandwich. Viral marketing and smart tweets ignited a social media battle and a frenzy for chicken sandwiches that was quickly dubbed the chicken sandwich war by consumers.
