Pilgrim's Pride to pay $4.5M to settle immigration investigation

Agreement marks the end of the government's investigation

Pilgrim's Pride Corp. has reached a settlement with the U.S. Attorney's office for the Eastern District of Texas and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), agreeing to pay $4.5 million over the next three years to settle an investigation into identity theft and other alleged crimes, according to a Pilgrim's Pride news release.

The agreement marks the end of the government's investigation at five Pilgrim's Pride plants that began in 2007. As part of the settlement, Pilgrim's Pride has also agreed to enhance its compliance programs to more accurately identify unauthorized persons who seek or gain employment through identity fraud or other unlawful means.

No civil or criminal charges were ever filed against the company during the course of the investigation.

The news comes two days after Pilgrim's Pride announced it had emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, completing a 13-month restructuring.
