Pork prices fall in Vietnam

Oversupply a result of fewer exports to China

Retail pork prices have dropped as much as 15% over the last week in Ho Chi Minh City, reports the Vietnam News Agency. Wholesale pork prices have experienced more drastic drops of ₫2,000 to ₫3,000 per kilogram for a final price of ₫37,000 to ₫42,000 per kilogram while, according to different farmers, live pork prices have decreased from ₫37,000 per kilogram to between ₫31,000 and ₫34,000 per kilogram.

The price drops are a result of plentiful supply, which in turn stems from fewer exports to China as that country decreases its pork consumption, the news agency reports.

Average prices were as high as ₫46,000 per kilogram in 2008, said Phung Khoi Phuc, director of Dong Nai Foodstuff Factory. Phung said that breeders could now lose ₫100,000 for each pig sold.
