Vietnam to develop own poultry breeds

Seeks to reduce reliance on imported varieties

As part of its plans to develop the domestic poultry sector, the Vietnamese government will encourage the breeding of domestic poultry varieties in order to replace imported ones, according to reports from Hanoi.

Vietnam's Prime Minister, Nguyen Tan Dung, announced a program to develop domestic plant and livestock varieties through 2020. The program is expected to receive substantial state funding.

Provisional figures have revealed that Vietnam's poultry industry performed well in the first nine months of 2009, with the number of poultry as of October 1, 2009, being 12.83% per cent higher at 280 million than the same period the previous year.
