Four Ohio legislators receive industry honors

Soy and grain growers also recognize Ohio State professor

The 2009 Ohio Grain Farmers Symposium honored four state legislators for advancing Ohio’s agriculture industry.

The symposium, an annual meeting of the Ohio Corn Growers AssociationOhio Soybean Association and Ohio Wheat Growers Associations that takes place in December, recognized state Rep. Allan Sayre and state Sens. Bob Gibbs, Karen Gillmor and Capri Cafaro with Legislator of the Year awards.

Gibbs and Sayre sponsored legislation that placed creation of the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board on the state ballot in November. The board won the approval of voters.

Gillmor and Cafaro were honored for their work on Ohio’s pending Senate Bill 131. The program outlined in Senate Bill 131 would be modeled after the federal BioPreferred program and would require state agencies and institutions of higher education to give purchasing preference to bio-based products when a bio-based alternative is available.

The symposium also honored Jim Beuerlein of The Ohio State University with its Distinguished Service award. Beuerlein has supervised the Ohio Soybean Performance Trials, Ohio Soybean Inoculation Trials and Ohio Wheat Performance Trials.
